Marty Markowitz: "This Was Not About Sex Dancing"

_Marty Markowitz: "This Was Not About Sex Dancing"

If it wasn't obvious from the tricycles, singing, and participation in "Lighten Up Brooklyn", Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz fancies himself something of a kook. But his kookiness didn't charm one Brooklyn dad: blogger Brooklyn Spoke, a self-described "Park Slope liberal breeder nutjob," thought it was a bit questionable that Markowitz brought a pole dancing exercise instructor on stage during a State of the Borough speech he made at Sunset Park High School recently. So he wrote him a little note. [MORE]

How To Stop Subway Accidents? Stop Trains Before Stations

With the latest rash of subway accidents, ideas on how to make platforms safer for straphangers are all the rage. Earlier this month came word that the MTA was mulling the idea of installing sliding doors in stations, but why stop there? District 65 Assemblyman Marcos Crespo thinks we should have trains come to a full stop before entering stations. Seriously. Don't worry, we thought it was a joke when we first read it too.... No Widely Publicized Icicle Audi Goes Unreplaced

Ok, we know we said that the Icicle Audi coverage was getting ridiculous and that we'd move on to other ice-covered objects, but you want to know whatever became of owner Pete Helfer, right? Helfer spent $7,300 in car repairs, and said, "It looks brand new But I'm uneasy about driving it." Well, he won't have to anymore, because a Long Island car dealer agreed to trade him a 2011 Infiniti G37X for the 2008 Audi. ... [ MORE ]

It seems that Gelman messed with the wrong guy: "You better hope I f---ing die, because I’m going to kill you if I don’t," Lozito shouted at Gelman after he had been apprehended by police.... Lady Gaga vs. Late '80s Madonna

Lady Gaga has released her new single, Born This Way—which she performed at the Grammys last night after emerging from her egg—and it's being criticized as a rip-off of Madonna's Express Yourself. The Fame Monster hasn't commented on the similarities, but did recently mention she wrote the song "in 10 fucking minutes," and even called it "an immaculate conception." Indeed! Let's go to the videotape:... [ MORE ]

Weiner Warns Of GOP's NYC Un-Friendly Budget

With Obama's budget out today, politically hungry Representative Anthony Weiner gave a Schumer-style presser yesterday that focused on how the GOP's alternative budget would directly harm New York City. How much would it hurt us? He calculates it would cost us like, one beeee-lion dollars.... [ MORE ]

Vast Majority Arrested For Pot Are Black Or Latino

This week, we learned that NYC has now become the "marijuana arrest capital of the world." The NYPD arrested 50,383 people for low-level marijuana offenses last year, making low-level pot possession the number one cause of arrest in NYC. But it's important to note who was getting arrested: according to the Drug Policy Alliance’s report, "86 percent of those arrested are Black or Latino, even though research consistently shows that young whites use marijuana at higher rates."...
