Is $270 A Reasonable Fine For Bicycling Through Red Light?

_Is $270 A Reasonable Fine For Bicycling Through Red Light?
[UPDATE BELOW] In case it wasn't crystal clear, the NYPD is serious about the bicycling crackdown. And, fittingly, Central Park seems to be at the heart of the so-called "enhanced enforcement" of traffic laws that bike riders have routinely flouted since forever. We previously broke the story about a cyclist who was shocked to find cops pulling him over for running a red light. He wasn't alone; we continue to get e-mails about the Central Park crackdown—earlier this week, one jogger told us: [MORE]

Man Brings His Ex Flowers, Fatally Shoots Her In Face

Yesterday, a man visited an Astoria pharmacy to see his ex-wife. Alexander Figueroa gave Giummia Villa a bouquet of flowers and then shot her in the face. Villa died at Mount Sinai Hospital Queens, and police found Figueroa dead inside his apartment, with a long confession letter. The pair had two sons and Villa previously had an order of protection on Figueroa. Her sister told the Post, "He beat her up just a week and a half ago at her job and told her he would kill her if she didn't go back with him. He was angry she had rejected him."... [ MORE ]

Welcome to NYC, "Marijuana Arrest Capital of the World"

Last year the NYPD arrested 50,383 people for low-level marijuana offenses, making low-level pot possession the number one cause of arrest in NYC. On average, nearly 140 people are arrested every day for marijuana possession in NYC, according to stats released by the New York Division of Criminal Justice Services and obtained by the Drug Policy Alliance. The announcement from the reformist group also comes with a friendly reminder that possession of 25 grams or less of marijuana was decriminalized 30 years ago. Not that this stops cops from arresting you for it. Here's how they do it, according to the DPA:... [ MORE ]

Bronx Man Killed By City Bus Making Turn

A 76-year-old man crossing a Bronx street was fatally struck by a NYC Transit bus making a turn at 6:55 p.m. last night. Edmundo Cortes, a father of 10 and grandfather of 20, was headed to the grocery store when crossed Castle Hill Avenue in the Parkchester section. The bus driver apparently didn't realize he hit anyone as he was making a right turn, because he continued driving until a witness ran after him and stopped him. Cortes' body was crushed under the wheels, and another witness told the Daily News, "It was a gruesome sight."... [ MORE ]

Bloomberg: NYPD Won't Enforce New Smoking Ban

When we talked with smoker's rights activist Audrey Silk about the new ban on smoking in parks and beaches the former police officer told us that "you can't enforce it. As a police officer I am telling you right now it is unenforceable from the NYPD's point. This is feel-good legislation so they can say 'I've done this.'" And would you lookie here, on WOR this morning Mayor Bloomberg said pretty much the same thing.... [ MORE ]
_Bloody Outrage? Blood Bus Blocks Broadway Bike Lane

Bloody Outrage? Blood Bus Blocks Broadway Bike Lane

Bike messenger Cassandra Castillo sent us this photo of a New York Blood Center blood donation bus parked in the dedicated bike lane on Broadway, near the intersection of 19th Street. Is it okay to block a bike lane if it's not an emergency, as long as it's for a good cause? Maybe sometimes in order to save lives you have to put other lives at risk! And considering how fast motorists race down Broadway (the deadliest street in NYC), this bus is definitely putting cyclists' lives at risk, by forcing them to swerve out into traffic. So we asked the Blood Center if bike lanes routinely serve as parking spots for their buses.... [ MORE ]

Chelsea Clinton Appears At Gala With Ski Bum Husband

What better way to refute rumors that your marriage is over than by appearing at a glittering gala? And it's even better when you can honor your dad, who happens to be a former President! Last night, Chelsea Clinton and husband Marc Mezvinsky appeared at the amfAR Gala, and the recent bride said of her father, President Bill Clinton, "The work he has done, the work he is doing and the work he will continue to do [for AIDS research is invaluable]... That's a good reason to be proud. An even better reason to be proud is he hasn't stopped."... [ MORE ]
