Ice in Beer? Who Taught Bloomberg How to Do That Stuff?

_Ice in Beer? Who Taught Bloomberg How to Do That Stuff?

Since presidential elections are typically won by the candidate voters most want to get a beer with, it looks like Mayor Bloomberg may well have ruined his barely-concealed presidential ambitions with his confession that he takes his beer on the rocks. That kind of freaky, vaguely elitist predilection isn't going to cut it in Coors country. As we reported yesterday, after refusing to sample the new beer at the ribbon cutting for the Brooklyn Brewery's new expansion, the mayor explained that he typically "[has] to put ice in [his] beer." For insight into this sacrilege, we turned to two Brooklyn beer aficionados, Bill Mack of Luckydog and Dave Pollack at the Diamond. Mack tells us: [MORE]

Why Can't Americans Get Married at McDonald's?!

Today a McDonald's in the financial district closed for a very special private party. Kelvin, a young model, rented out the place for a $1,282 wedding party complete with pink balloons, a "cake" stacked from apple pies, and a pair of tiny souvenir crystal M rings. The engagement party is the first to take advantage of a new McWedding service McDonald's launched in January. You are probably very excited to book your daughter's wedding at one of McDonald's conveniently-located outlets. But not in America, pal. Kelvin's party was at a McDonald's in the financial district of Hong Kong, which is currently the only place in the world were people are free to celebrate their love at the McDonald's of their choice.... Free Brooklyn Craigslist Digs Turn Into Sex Slavery Nightmare

A too-good-to-be-true offer of a free room in a Brooklyn apartment turned out to be how a man allegedly lured a Wisconsin woman to his East Williamsburg home, where he is accused of beating, chaining her to a radiator and raping her. John Hopkins, 45, was charged with rape, assault and unlawful imprisonment. ... [ MORE ]

Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Cover Reveal Spoiled by Twitter

Last night David Letterman scored "a worldwide scoop"—as the Associated Press enviously puts it—when he was the first person ON EARTH to reveal the cover of the momentous 2011 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue. But proving once again that the old media dinosaurs just can't compete with today's instant internet news-hounds, Letterman himself was scooped when, six hours before his show aired, Twitter user @ranibanani4 published a photograph of the cover plastered on a giant billboard near the Late Show studios. ... Video: Lady Gaga Talks Madonna, Yonkers

Last night Lady Gaga chatted with Jay Leno about the controversy surrounding her new single Born This Way, and its striking similarity to Madonna's Express Yourself. She told the host, “There is really no one who is a more adoring and loving Madonna fan than me. I am the hugest fan, personally and professionally. Well the good news is I got an email from her people sending me their love and support on behalf of the single. And if the queen says it shall be, then it shall be!” But isn't sending love and support via your "people," perhaps... a little passive aggressive? ... [ MORE ]

No Charges In Fatal Police Shooting Of Pace Student

A Westchester grand jury declined to bring charges against two police officers who shot and killed a Pace University student last October. Danroy "D.J." Henry was killed when the car he was driving hit two police officers who had been responding to a rowdy scene at a Thornton, NY restaurant; when Henry did not stop the car, the police officers fired at him. The Journal News reports that the White Plains jury heard from "dozens of witnesses in the past month — including the officers and other occupants of the car Henry was driving." ... [ MORE ]

[Updated] Please, Even On Valentine's, Don't Climb Her Their Fire Escape

[Big Update Below] Sometimes a romantic gesture can land you in the hospital. No, not that kind of gesture. The Daily News today has a story about the kind of incident we're talking about. Last night a 30-year-old Romeo tried to visit his girlfriend in Morningside Heights. But when he got to her building around midnight nobody answered the door. But he was there, and it being Valentine's and all, he went for the romantic gesture and climbed up her fire escape. All was well until he got to the third floor, at which point he slipped and fell back to the ground.... [ MORE ]
